Fashion Mixtape: Die Antwoord + Alexander Wang

Having collaborated with musicians like Diplo, Santigold and Spank Rock, Alexander Wang shocked onlookers by featuring the fascinating, unlikely group Die Antwoord in his promotional fashion videos. Born out of South Africa’s zef scene (a postapartheid subculture of mostly young whites who embrace white-trash and hip-hop stereotypes, according to elle.com) Die Antwoord is an anomaly in the world of fashion. Yo-Landi Vi$$er, the group’s female lead, stands out as she crosses boundaries of fashion and the occult, wearing all black contact lenses and gold lamé leggings.

Fashion Mixtape: Songstresses with Style

Fashion Mixtape 3 is brought to you by the punked-out, pumped up looks of musical mavens Lissy Trullie, Grimes, and Santigold. Grab your air guitar and rock out in style to the beat of today’s hottest singers.

In 2009, this downtown darling swooned us with her husky voice, a serious rendition of Hot Chip’s Ready For The Floor and her glam-punk style. After three years, the songstress has made her comeback and released her very first album, Lissy Trullie. Lissy’s  (born Elizabeth “Lizzy” Chesney) sense of style is a marriage of understated sex appeal and downtown cool. Get her look by pairing a boyish basic top with well-fitting jeans, a pair of high-heel boots and a dangerously red pout.

Grimes’s (Born Claire Boucher) cyborg-pop music is like a time machine that brings us back to the eighties, with  electro-pop and futuristic beats and vocals. But besides her catchy music (re: Oblivion), Grimes’s eclectic sense of style is another aspect that put her on the radar. The confident layering of camo patterns, sequenced shirts and statement jewelry had us wanting more.

Santigold, formerly known as Santogold, is bringing back her cool with her latest album Master of My Make-Believe. Her latest work continues to emit the same urban pop reminiscent of L.E.S. Artistes and unexpected beats. Another thing to woo over is her urban jungle sense of style.

Oversized flannel shirts, floor-grazing skirts, dark make-up palette and a ton of attitude in these New York streets and runways had us thinking about our teen spirit and yes, the good ‘ole nineties. So we laced up our Docs, wore our burgundy lipstick and gathered our older brother’s nineties records (and a little bit of contemporary grunge) for a little fashion-inspired mixtape. Enjoy!
