“It’s a whole Mu world out there,” says Cologne, one half of the design duo behind the whimsical line, Show Me Your Mumu. And that it is. After an eye-opening trip to Miami back in 2009, designers Cammy and Cologne decided to take their dreams from fairy tale to reality with an unexpectedly chic item: the mumu. two + seven caught up with the fun-loving gals for an exclusive look into the world of mumus!
two + seven: What were you guys doing before your fateful “spontaneous and unnecessarily essential Miami weekend adventure?” Was it a difficult decision to take the plunge into entrepreneurship?
Cologne of Show Me Your Mumu: Cammy and I had both recently graduated from UC Berkeley, and were working in Showrooms in NYC. Cammy was working for Elizabeth and James and Patterson J Kincaid and I was working in the Calvin Klein Showroom. These experiences gave us knowledge of the industry, and helped us in starting Mumu. It was a relatively easy decision to start Mumu; I suppose it was a little scary quitting our jobs and moving to LA to pursue Mumu full-time, but we were ready and we knew it was the right decision. It is certainly more challenging running your own business, but rewarding as well. Luckily Mumu is all about having fun, so we try to keep that mindset in the office! There are always disasters, but overall Mumu has been a really fun ride.
2+7: In addition to Mumus, you also sell a bevy of beautiful tops, bottoms, rompers… will there eventually be accessories to go with them?
SMYMM: Yes, we are introducing sweaters and cozy t-shirts in Spring ’13, and will hopefully be adding more categories soon. Swim, Lingere, shoes, jewels…. Mumu wants to do it all!
2+7: Being “two free-spirited and lively ladies,” does it get ever get challenging working together? Ever butt heads?
SMYMM: Cammy and I actually work very well together. It is good to butt heads sometimes, because it forces you to think harder about the decision. We have similar taste, but our differences allow Mumu to reach out to a broader audience. For example, Cammy wears more solids, and I wear more prints…so we always have been sure to give both attention from the beginning. We are very lucky though, because we are such good friends and we get to work together every day! We can be very serious, but we have a lot of fun too
2+7: Starting your business, what has been your biggest challenge both personally and professionally?
SMYMM: Starting a business is very challenging, and we both found it hard to separate our work lives from our personal lives. Sometimes you find yourself working all the time, and forgetting to ever “leave the office”. It is also hard not to take things personally when things go wrong. Eventually though, it gets easier not to let the setbacks bother you, and just keep working hard! Nothing is the end of the world. Mumus will get made!
2+7: What’s next?
SMYMM: We are working on our Spring ’13 collection, which includes knitwear, and all new amazing chiffon prints and styles. The whole Mumu team is headed to Mexico for our Spring Photoshoot next week, so we are all very excited about that. Then, who knows… it’s a whole Mu world out there!
And in case you were wondering…
What is the definition of a mumu?
Mumu: (mōō’mōō’) noun.
When worn with a slip it is a short dress, when worn with pants it is a long top, when worn with a bikini it is a tunic, when worn with a belt it is…well…belted, and when worn to bed it is a nightie. It is your favorite piece in your closet and the only thing you really ever need.
