As its name suggests, Of a Kind is like the pieces it sells. Every item sold on the site is limited-edition, designed exclusively for Of a Kind. Visitors have the opportunity to own something truly special and collectible. Each order includes a certificate of authenticity signed by the designer.
Founded in November 2010, Of a Kind promotes emerging fashion designers through integrated retail and editorial content. Each week, three designers are commissioned to create limited-edition, exclusive pieces, which are released in conjunction with articles detailing the back-stories of each designer.
Of a Kind offers a new way to engage with products and content, enhancing the connection between buyer and designer. Early adopters, tired of find-anywhere pieces and detached consumption, discover stronger ties to the pieces they purchase; designers creating pieces for Of a Kind benefit from in-depth exposure to an eager audience of influencers. - Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo
2+7: What kind of brands do you carry/have you carried?
Of a Kind: We have collaborated with over 100 designers and has sold in 47 states and 30 countries. Some of the designers Of a Kind has worked with include: Mandy Coon, Erica Weiner, Tucker, Dusen Dusen, Wren, Clare Vivier, and Gigi Burris to name a few.
2+7: What editions are coming up?
of a kind: We have editions coming up from Fleabags, ORA, and Materials + Process that we are so excited about. We release three new editions a week, so there’s always something on the horizon for us to look forward to.
2+7: What do you look for when merchandising/choosing designers?
of a kind: First off, we look for designers whose work we are drawn to aesthetically. It’s really important to us that we like a designer’s collection on the whole—not just a few pieces from their line. From there, it’s also really key that a designer is serious about his/her line. We figure that for us to invest our energy into promoting it, the designer should be really dedicated as well.
2+7: Who is your customer?
of a kind: When we think about our customer, we think about people who want to consume thoughtfully and want to know the stories behind the things they buy.
2+7: Advice for new designers to stand out to store buyers/owners?
of a kind: Have a distinct point of view! We’re much more drawn to lines that feel cohesive and special than ones that feel on-trend.
