“I’ve always had a sweet tooth for fashion,” says designer Cassie Kogler of the psychedelic, ultra-glam, New York Couture. The punk rock princess-esque label is indeed a tasty treat, with glamorous one-of-a-kind creations worn by the likes of Katy Perry, Pink, and Agnyss Deyn – just to name a few. two + seven caught up with the eccentric mommy-to-be in an interview that’s as exciting and colorful as her unique creations.
two + seven: So tell us a little about the brand and how you got started.
Cassie K: New York Couture is a euphonious rush of an ’80s childish cartoon nostalgia sprinkled with a dash of girlish pixie dust. I’ve been into fashion since womb status (laughs). I’ve always had a sweet tooth for fashion. When my sister and I were young my mom would dress us in Christian Dior frocks; ironic that as an adult that’s one of my favorite brands. It’s only fitting that I became a clothing designer.
2+7: Who is the New York Couture woman?
CK: Someone who has obviously gone insane. Ha! I believe in having fun with what you wear! Being UNIQUE or one of a kind is important for me on the inside AND the outside!
2+7: You were featured on MTV: how was that experience? Do you feel like it helped the brand and fans get a better idea of who you are as a designer?
CK: My MTV family that followed me around was SOOO much fun!! It was a great experience! It allowed a broader audience to see the madness that is my everyday and that IS New York Couture.
2+7: What are you working on now?
CK: Making my GREATEST creation to date…a sweet little baby boy is growing in my belly…sorry for the cheese…but he is what consumes most of my life right now. That DOESN’T mean New York Couture is coming to a stand-still by ANY means! In fact…I think my creativity has been at a heightened peak while pregnant! Already working on the next collection. I’m pretty EXCITED because these pieces are like my super popular kitschy pieces…but have a clever twist I KNOW my clients will LOVE!! Soo frickin’ CUTE!
2+7: Where are you sold? Where would you LOVE to be sold?
CK: The best place to shop for New York Couture is on our online web store: newyorkcouture.net. We’re sold worldwide, but since we do such limited editions or one of a kind pieces everything sells out…YAY! I would LOVE to be sold in my own boutique…that’s definitely in the future…a New York Couture boutique in NYC!! WATCH OUT!
2+7: Are you going to do another fashion show?
CK: Do chickens have feathers? OF COURSE!!!! We’ve been so busy it’s been hard to make any time to plan a Fashion Week show, but the itch never goes away…so it will be BACK and BIGGER than ever!! We’ll let everyone know…so make sure you’re signed up on our mailing list!!
2+7: What is your favorite pieces?
CK: The Bustier Party Dress.
2+7: So what’s next? Where do you see the brand going?
CK: I’ll keep pushing the envelope making the craziest, most ridiculous garments EVER! And to open a store…NYC to start…and then worldwide Japan, London, etc. Hey if I got this far…the rest seems pretty easy : )
